Over the years long distance catamaran racing has become phenomenally popular, with fleets at the Texel race in Holland topping 800 boats.
The Solent Slog is a race open to catamarans and fast dinghies which, as the name suggests, is a 'long distance' race which does test the metal of the teams both in strength and endurance.
The race will start on Sunday 6th from Western Sailing Club on Southampton water. It's then a flat-out blast to down to Calshot Spit and turn right, onwards to the I.O.W. passing Cowes (avoiding the Seacat/Ferry) then still further on heading WSW along the coastline to our half way point Hurst Castle. Turning 180deg we shall be homeward bound returning back to where we start at Western Sailing Club.
For small fast boats approx 40 nautical miles as the crow flys is a great challenge.
The boat Team Shukers will be racing is a Nacra F20 high performance catamaran. At 20 feet long with up to 50m3 of sail area shes an extremely fast boat.
The race has been sailed at just over 2 hrs however the weather, like with all these things has to be on your side!
Speaking from my point of view and I'm sure my sailing buddy Rian we both really appreciate the sponsorship and hope to do our very best and enjoy the event, whatever the conditions throw at us.
Think of us on June 6th and by all means come down to witness the entertaining spectacle that is... THE SOLENT SLOG!
